Ads in apps and websites aren’ new, but how annoying do you think it will be if you were to unlock your smartphone and see an ad displayed? After all you paid for your smartphone in full, so why should the phone itself contain ads, right? However Tesco Mobile is hoping that you will view ads on your phone, in exchange for a lower phone bill.
Over in the UK, Tesco Mobile has announced an initiative where they will knock £3 off your monthly bill if you are willing to view ads in your lockscreen for at least 21 consecutive days. This will involve users downloading an app in which from time to time after unlocking your phone, a full screen ad will appear.
Considering that Tesco’s contracts are priced starting at £7.50 a month, bringing it down to £4.50 certainly sounds like bargain if you’re trying to save some money. The ads will also not count towards your monthly data limit, although it should be noted that at the moment, the amount they’ll knock off your bill remains fixed, meaning that it doesn’t matter how many times ads are displayed, it will still be the same amount knocked off at the end of the month.
Speaking to TechRadar, Tesco Mobile’s CEO Anthony Vollmer said, “We’d always keep [adverts] optional. We’d never, ever make it compulsory. It’s all about control for the customer. It definitely won’t be for everyone – but for those who are up for it it’s a great option to have.” What do you guys think of this move though?
