Samsung today announced that it has acquired Joyent, a company that offers private cloud software and a public cloud infrastructure. Now you might be wondering why Samsung has acquired such a company. For starters, Joyent’s technology can be used to build and deploy applications, and its technology can also help Samsung compete against other cloud service providers like Google, Amazon, Microsoft.
Samsung confirmed the acquisition in a statement but did not reveal the terms of this deal, it did mention that Joyent will continue to function as a separate company.
This deal will also help Joyent as it will be able to expand its data center footprint courtesy of Samsung’s infinitely bigger pockets and better compete in the very competitive cloud computing market.
Joyent CEO Scott Hammond alluded to as much in his blog post, saying “Until today, we lacked one thing. We lacked the scale required to compete effectively in the large, rapidly growing and fiercely competitive cloud computing market. Now, that changes.”
Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform are three of the most popular cloud infrastructure providers. With Samsung’s backing, Joyent will be able to take on them more effectively and play a much bigger role in this market.
