It’s starting to look like in the future, maybe 5-10 years, that programming will be a mandatory class that will be taught to kids. Right now there certainly is a lot of interest and there are some schools who are implementing it as a compulsory subject, although thankfully if you’re hoping to give your kids a head start in their education, there are many options to choose from.
One of those options that was recently revealed is Osmo Coding. These are essentially building blocks that teaches children how to program at the same time. We suppose this isn’t about programming in a specific language, but rather teaching children the concepts of programming, like algorithms and the logical thought process behind problem solving using coding.
How Osmo Coding works is basically through a video game, in which players have to use the blocks to control their character on the screen. The blocks will allow their character to move, jump, and grab objects, and at the same time players can add variables like numbers, loops, like walk down 3 spaces, turn right 2 spaces, and so on.
When they’re done, they press a button in order to execute the script. It’s a clever idea and we have to say that it looks pretty fun. Now like we said there are plenty of options out there to teach your kids how to code, but if you like the physical nature of Osmo Coding, it is priced at $75 for a starter kit, or $49 as a standalone if you already own the mirror accessory required for it to work from other Osmo products you’ve bought in the past.
