To that extent, a report from The Information (paywall; via The Verge) has revealed that Huawei is apparently developing their own mobile operating system that would be an alternative to Android should things go sideways. The report claims that Huawei is developing the platform over in Scandinavia and has engineers who used to work at Nokia working on it.
That being said, this isn’t really that big of a stretch even though it is a rumor for now. After all we have seen the likes of Samsung create their own mobile operating system in the form of Tizen, and while the bulk of Samsung’s mobile products are still Android, the company has made it pretty obvious that they’re trying not to depend too much on Google which is why Samsung’s wearables are powered by Tizen, and not Android Wear.
Of course it remains to be seen if this operating system will be launched or if this is something Huawei plans to keep in their back pocket, but it will be interesting to see what they can come up with that might make it more compelling than Android.
