GTA Online Won’t Be Around Forever

Grand Theft Auto 5 is a great game. It has made Rockstar a lot of money and the game’s multiplayer component GTA Online is in a class of its own. Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two regularly cites GTA Online as its top performer in quarterly earnings reports and it’s believed to have earned the company as much as $500 million from microtransactions. However, as they say, all good things must come to an end. Rockstar has said that there will come a time when GTA Online will no longer be supported.

It’s not doing anything immediately so you don’t need to worry about GTA Online just yet. On the contrary, Rockstar is gearing up to release the biggest content update yet for GTA Online and plans to continue supporting it with new content for a considerable amount of time.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said that the company never intended GTA Online to be “permanent,” meaning that it’s likely that at some point in the future Rockstar will just stop support GTA Online with new content. Even though that possibility exists, Rockstar isn’t going to be doing that anytime soon.

Zelnick says that it’s important that GTA Online not be permanent, “we have to rest the franchise at some point,” he added. He won’t say just how long it’s going to be until the decision is made. So, for now, we can look forward to the upcoming massive expansion called Further Adventures in Finance and Felony. Rockstar has already said that it’s going to release multiple massive, feature-rich expansions for GTA Online throughout 2016.
