So far in terms of smartphones, Google has not made any of the devices themselves. They have instead opened up the bid to other Android OEMs, although presumably Google does have a say in what they want from the phone in terms of features, and what OEMs can and cannot do with their devices.
However that could soon change because according to a report from The Telegraph, word has it that Google is planning on launching their own Android smartphone this year that will not be of the Nexus variety, meaning that Google will be in charge of its design, software, and manufacturing from start to end.
This move would essentially make Google almost like Apple who makes their own hardware and software (suddenly Huawei’s fears don’t seem so unfounded after all). It allows them a greater degree of control over the experience, especially in the updating process where last we checked, iOS 9 was sitting over 80%, a great deal more than the current build of Android which is around 7.5%.
That being said, Google did not comment on the rumors, but there have been reports that HTC could be making Nexus handsets as well, so we’re not sure how this phone will fit into the picture, although we guess ultimately it would just provide users with more options when it comes to using stock Android. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Would a Google-made handset be something you might be interested in?
