BitTorrent is reportedly going to launch a TV news network on its BitTorrent Live streaming platform. The news network will be available alongside the channels that are already available on its live streaming platform. It’s going to create an entire set up from ground zero, hire talent, and get the news network up and running. It’s even going to develop a network of international contributors for this purpose.
A Variety report points to a job listing which reveals that BitTorrent is looking for a new director. The listing mentions that the company has recently launched a live video streaming platform and now “we need a team to create a tent-pole live news channel to run on it.”
The job listing is for a director who will be responsible for hiring and managing a team of journalists who will work out of the company’s San Francisco office. According to the report, it’s likely that this news network could be launched around the U.S. presidential election later this year in the fall.
It may be different from existing 24 hour rolling news channels, as it might focus on political campaigns, tech and cultural events, sporting events, etc. If this channel does get up and running it would be the first such channel to be directly produced by BitTorrent itself. It would be a competitor to Newsmax TV which is another cable news channel that available on BitTorrent Live.
