With the number of things that are imported on a daily basis, it would not be humanly possible to check every single thing, which is why sometimes certain things slip through the cracks. Either that or smugglers have gotten smarter at hiding their illegal imports which could easily fool the human eye, which is where computers come in.
Over at the University College London, researchers have come up with an idea which will rely on AI to detect smuggled cars in shipping containers. Basically these containers will be put through the X-ray, but from the scans, the AI will be able to pick out and identify cars and even those that might have been cleverly hidden from human eyes.
So far it seems that the system is very, very adept at what it does and has successfully managed to identify with 100% accuracy with few false alarms. That being said, we reckon that further testing and study needs to be done on this before it can be implemented as a proper tool that can be used by customs, but like we said, the researchers are boasting a pretty high success rate which is rather encouraging.
