It has been known for some time now that Uber is also working on self-driving cars but the company hasn’t really talked about it, until today. It has finally shown off its first self-driving car, it hasn’t made the car itself, just the technology that enables the car to drive on its own. The car itself is a hybrid Ford Fusion that has the necessary equipment for autonomous driving.
Uber has shared the first official picture of its self-driving car today, it’s testing the car on the streets of Pittsburgh. It will continue testing the vehicle around Pittsburg in the coming weeks.
This car is going to be collecting mapping data aside from testing its self-driving capabilities, and whenever it’s in self-driving mode a trained driver will be behind the wheel at all times to monitor operations.
Uber’s self-driving car is kitted with a variety of sensors that includes laser scanners, radars, high-resolution cameras and more. Real-world testing is critical to Uber’s efforts to develop self-driving car technology. The company says that it’s currently focused on getting the technology right and ensuring that it’s safe for everybody on the road, including cyclists and pedestrians.
“We’re excited that Uber has chosen the Steel City as they explore new technologies that can improve people’s lives — through increased road safety, less congestion, and more efficient and smarter cities,” said William Peduto, the Mayor of Pittsburgh.
