Takata, for those unfamiliar, is a company who supplies airbag systems to various carmakers such as Honda and Toyota, but as you might have heard, it seems that the company has issued a massive recall for their airbag systems which have been found to be the cause of multiple accidents that have happened in recent times.
Last we heard, the company was planning to recall over 100 million airbags, but it looks like it isn’t stopping there. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, they have heard from their sources that the company could be looking to recall an additional 35 million airbag systems as soon as this week.
However it should be noted that neither Takata nor the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have confirmed the rumors, but no doubt if it were true, it would be adding onto the headache and mess that the company is currently dealing with, not to mention the amount of money and potential lawsuits that they could face as a direct result of this.
Just in case you’re wondering what the big deal is, Takata’s airbag systems have been found to have the tendency to explode upon deployment, and the force of the explosion has sent metal and glass shrapnel shooting at the passengers in the cars. So far there have been 11 reported deaths and at least 100 injuries to date as a result of this.
