You can go out and get quite a lot of movies in Ultra HD Blu-ray format but you’re pressed for choice when it comes to players that are capable of playing these discs. In the United States customers really only have one option and that’s the Samsung UBD-K8500, but there will be more to choose from next month as the Philips Ultra-HD Blu-ray player will hit the market.
Philips will be launching two models of its Ultra HD Blu-ray player, the BDP7501 which comes in brushed aluminum and the BDP7301 which comes in piano black. Both of them cost $400 and do what the name suggests.
They are capable of playing Ultra HD Blu-ray discs and also have support for HDR content, a new trend in the content industry, but to get that experience, users will need to have a TV that supports HDR content.
Dolby TrueHD Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio support is present alongside an HDMI-out for receivers that aren’t 4K-compatible yet. It’s capable of streaming 4K content from the likes of Netflix and YouTube as well.
It may take some time before other companies come out with similar products. Panasonic has released a similar product in the United Kingdom and it could bring it over to the United States at some point in the coming months.
