The virtual reality trend has picked up steam over the past couple of years and it doesn’t look like the trend is going to slow down soon. We’re seeing new hardware, software and partnerships being forged for the advancement of virtual reality and we can soon expect to see this technology in more places. IMAX isn’t shying away from adopting this technology as well, it has confirmed that it’s going to provide virtual reality content in its theaters.
IMAX is best known for the immersive experiences that it has provided in theaters for a very long time, so it makes perfect sense for IMAX to experiment with this technology that enables really immersive experiences.
For this purpose, IMAX is going to use the software platform from Swedish developer Starbreeze as well as the company’s StarVR headset. It’s a unique headset since it provides a 210-degree field of view which is not something that most headsets available in the market offer. Starbreeze recently inked a partnership with Acer which will help it build the headsets.
IMAX is going to create virtual reality experiences revolving around some major Hollywood movies, and it’s likely to charge between $7 to $10 for a ten minute VR experience. IMAX is looking to launch VR experiences in six locations across the globe by the end of this year.
