It was recently reported that Hulu was looking to take on the likes of Sling TV and PlayStation Vue by launching a live streaming TV service of its own. The company has already been in the online streaming business for a few years and now it’s expanding into a market not a lot of its rivals have gone into yet. Hulu has confirmed today that it’s indeed going to launch a live TV streaming service by next year.
Hulu confirmed that through this service it will give subscribers the ability to stream live programming from cable and broadcast brands. Content will include live news, sports, and events. Just as the case is with other online TV streaming services, a traditional cable subscription will not be required.
CEO Mike Hopkins didn’t go into much detail other than what he confirmed about this service. The report had suggested that Hulu was talking to ABC, ESPN, FX, Fox, and Disney, among others, to get them to provide their channels for live streaming on Hulu’s service.
It hasn’t been confirmed as yet what this service will be called when it’s launched next year and how much it’s going to cost. It does appear that subscribers won’t need to subscribe to Hulu’s main streaming service if they only want to use its live TV streaming offering. Hopkins did say that Hulu will provide more details about this service later this year.
