The inevitable has happened to the Nexus Player after all this while – it is no longer available for purchase from the Google Store. Ah well, this is but the circle of life, even for hardware, as nothing remains forever as new models are released from time to time. While the release of the Nexus Player with Android TV did come with a pretty slick interface alongside solid streaming options, it did not look as though it catered to a decent enough number of people for it to justify its existence.
Hence, with the pulling of the Nexus Player from the Google Store, it would mean that NVIDIA’s Shield box remains the last standing Android TV device that is available from Google. As for the other players in the market, the Mi Box from Xiaomi might be worth checking out when it arrives, and other manufacturers happen to be integrating Android TV into TVs themselves. However, do take note that with the Nexus Player gone, so too, is one of the cheaper options to enjoy Android TV in your home.
Thankfully, the Nexus Player being not on sale any longer does not equal to it no longer receiving support, as it will continue to receive the latest Android platform updates, while having access to the in-development Android N preview.
