There are many smartphones out there that enable users to capture photos in RAW format which they can edit and process later. The capability to do this exists in a lot of smartphones but some still require a software switch to be flipped, and it’s likely that this might be done in an upcoming update for the Google Camera application.
It appears that Google might soon release an update for the official Google Camera app that’s going to allow users with Nexus smartphones to take pictures in RAW format. The revelation comes from within the latest Google Camera app which contains references that suggest this feature is currently being tested.
Text strings have been located inside the app which show that a “RAW+JPEG” mode is being tested for this app when enabled, the mode will save two copies when a photo is taken: one in RAW and the other in JPEG.
Even though Google Camera is a standalone app that can be installed on any Android device, it appears that this RAW+JPEG mode might be exclusive to Nexus smartphones.
It’s not like those phones will be gaining any new functionality, there are a plethora of third-party apps that enable RAW photography on Nexus smartphones, but it would be nice to see the same feature in Google’s official Camera app.
