The Eye-Plug Will Give Your Smartphone 3D Capture Capabilities

Earlier today we reported about a lens attachment for the GoPro called the Vitrima. Basically this allows GoPros to capture footage in 3D, versus the normal 2D footage. We have to admit that it is a pretty cool idea, but what if you don’t have a GoPro? Does this mean you don’t get to get in on the 3D fun?

The good news is that during Computex, it was discovered by the folks at Engadget that there is a company selling an accessory called the Eye-Plug. This accessory will work with smartphones, but the only downside is that it requires a USB-C connection, so if you have an older device we guess you’d be out of luck.

So how does this work? Basically it has a camera facing the front and one facing the back. It is meant to combine with your front and rear-facing cameras to create a stereoscopic-like image, and for $35 we have to wonder if it works. Turns out it does, at least according to Engadget who took it for a spin and said that the end result was “a perfectly acceptable resolution for Google Cardboard 3D viewing.”

That being said there are some disadvantages to the Eye-Plug, one of which is that its image quality might not match that of your current camera, and it also requires a USB-C connection which means that not many devices are compatible. At the moment the Eye-Plug is said to still be a prototype but full production is expected for later this year.
