Just like how mobile gaming has replaced the need for dedicated handheld consoles, will there ever become a time where consoles are replaced by other forms of gaming, such as PC gaming in the future? A couple of years ago, NVIDIA’s CEO seemed to think so and it looks like he isn’t alone in this line of thinking.According to EA’s Chief Competition Officer Peter Moore, he expressed his opinion that in the future there will no longer be the need for consoles. Speaking to The Daily Orange in an interview, Moore said that he expects game streaming to be the way of things. “I’m not sure there will be consoles, as we know them anymore. Games will be accessed by streaming technology, so we don’t need hardware intermediaries in between the two.”
He adds that it could be as simple as just firing up a game on any monitor, as long as it is capable of streaming said game. “If you and I want to play Battlefield 12 against each other, we’ll just jump into a game via whatever monitor we happen to have in our homes. It’ll be on a chip, rather than in a box.”
The concept of streaming video games isn’t new, but we guess we haven’t really gotten to the point where it is commercially viable. That being said, we reckon that this future is still some time away, but in the more immediate future, we are looking at potential console refreshes from Microsoft and Sony, and let’s not forget the Nintendo NX which is due for a release next year.
