Ubisoft CEO: Streaming Could Eventually Replace Consoles

It is understandable why back in the day consoles had to exist. This is because PCs designed for gaming were simply too expensive for the average computer user, and consoles allowed gamers to play all manner of games without worrying about their hardware not being powerful enough. Fast forward to today, that is no longer true as PC gaming rigs are starting to become more affordable.

So does that mean that eventually consoles could go the way of the dinosaur? Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot seems to think so, and he also thinks that streaming could be what eventually replaces consoles in the living room at home. This is according to a recent earnings call by Ubisoft as transcribed by GameSpot.

According to Guillemot, “Now on the console side, we expect there will be new consoles that are going to make this market continue to grow and we feel it’s… we’ll still have another generation of consoles before we have new types of consoles coming to the market.” On the topic of streaming, Guillemot says, “We believe in streaming–it demands lots of bandwidth. We think it’s going to grow but today, with the types of games we have, it will still take a bit of time to be more popular.”

His statement seems to echo the statements made by EA’s Chief Competition Officer Peter Moore, who also opined that streaming will be the medium of gaming in the future. That being said, Guillemot and Moore aren’t alone in their predictions that consoles could be dying off in the future, as back in 2014, NVIDIA’s CEO also suggested that console gaming could be coming to an end.
