Speaking at the opening of the company’s annual meeting, BMW chairman Harald Krüger mentioned that BMW is going to launch the i NEXT, an electric and self-driving flagship model it calls the “innovation driver” in 2021. He didn’t provide a lot of details about this car but it’s clear that this is going to be BMW’s car of the future that takes on the Teslas of the world. It goes without saying that many will be looking forward to seeing BMW’s vision of the car of the future.
Not a lot of information is available about the i NEXT at this point in time, but it appears that this will be BMW’s most advanced car which will feature a lightweight design, autonomous driving, digital connectivity, an overhauled interior as well as “the next generation of electro-mobility.”
Since this is going to be the flagship model, it’s likely that the technology BMW introduces with the i NEXT will eventually trickle down to BMW’s other models. BMW hasn’t confirmed what kind of a car the i NEXT is going to be, whether it’s a conventional sedan like a Tesla or a sportscar like the i8.
In five years we’ll see what BMW’s car of the future looks like. It may not be as drastic as the BMW Vision Next 100 concept which imagines what BMW cars may look like in the year 2116, but from the looks of it, the i NEXT will be a technological marvel of its time.
