Apple Reportedly Turns To LG For Dual-Lens Camera Module

One of the rumored features and biggest changes that Apple is said to be making to the iPhone 7, would be the inclusion of a dual-lens camera system for the iPhone 7 Plus. A dual-lens setup isn’t new as we have seen other OEMs attempt it in the past, but it will be the first for Apple who has for the most part stuck with more traditional setups.

Sony was originally tasked to provide the camera modules for the dual-lens system, but apparently the company has fallen behind schedule and because of that, Apple has turned to LG for the modules instead. This is based on a note to investors by Chris Chang of Nomura Securities where he has speculated a couple of possibilities why this is.

According to Chang, “We think Sony may not be able to deliver its full share of dual cameras to Apple due to: (1) lower-than-expected yield, and (2) damage to its production facility from the April earthquake in Kumamoto.” Sony has typically provided Apple (and other OEMs) with camera modules in the past with great success.

Assuming the rumors of LG supplying the components are true, we’re not sure how this will pan out and whether or not quality will be noticeable. Either way it is best taken with a grain of salt, but we suppose all will be revealed in the coming months when Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in September.
