This App Will Solve Maths Problems By Pointing Your Phone At It

Need to solve a math problem? Just fire up the calculator and you should be able to solve a variety of problems. However what if you did not know where to start, or how to use your calculator to perform differentiations and simultaneous equations? The good news is that there is an app for that.

Math solving apps aren’t new, but it seems that there is now a math solving app called Mathpix that will allow users to point their smartphone’s at it and it will solve it for them. This is done by using your phone’s camera in which the app will be able to recognize mathematical formulas and equations in order to perform said calculation.

So what makes Mathpix so different from the other math solving apps out there? According to its creators, it is capable of recognize handwriting meaning that you could essentially point it at the board your lecturer is writing on and have it solve the problems for you. It can also provide graph answers where needed, and offers step-by-step methods to reach the solution.

However the only downside is that it will require an internet connection as the processing is done on an external server, not your phone. The app is created by Stanford PhD student Nico Jimenez, who was advised by Stanford grad Paul Ferrell, along with high schoolers Michael Lee and August Trollback. It is iOS-only (for now) so head on over to the iTunes App Store to get your hands on it.
