Ads contribute a significant chunk to Google’s bottom line every quarter so it’s not surprising to see the company expand them to more of its products. Google Search is one of the most lucrative products that the company has and while you’re all accustomed to seeing ads in search results, you will soon have to adjust to seeing ads in image search as well. That’s right, Google is bringing ads to Google image Search.
Google is launching its shopping ads on Images. They will be displayed at the very top of the results. The line of ads will only be displayed on mobile, for now, the ads will be for sponsored items that are related to what you search for.
For example, say that you’re searching for images of a sofa, you’ll see the line of sponsored items at the very top of the results. Google will give you options to sort the products by color and type, and will point you to locations where the sponsored items can be purchased from.
Vice president of shopping at Google Jon Alferness tells Business Insider that the goal here is to make shopping easier on smartphones. “The most common feedback people have left with Google Images is, ‘I like these products — how much do they cost and where can I buy them?'” he says.
Google is answering that question with this new type of ad, capitalizing on a new opportunity to make money in the process.
