This is according to a report from Reuters in which Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said that the company could be ceasing Wii U production by March 2018. Note that this isn’t confirmation or a guarantee that it will, but at the very least Nintendo has the finish line for the Wii U in their sights.
However this shouldn’t be too surprising. Earlier today Nintendo confirmed that their Nintendo NX console will be seeing a release in March 2017, so it makes sense that Nintendo would rather focus their production and developmental efforts on their latest console, rather than the Wii U which let’s face it, hasn’t exactly been doing too well.
Kimishima notes that he expects the company to sell as many as 800,000 units of the Wii U in 2016 alone. This is a dramatic decrease from last year’s figures in which the company managed to sell 3.26 million, but hopefully the Nintendo NX will give Nintendo the success that they need.
