If you are the sort who loves future proofing your gadgets, then maybe you might want to consider holding off on purchasing a Wii U for now if you haven’t done so already. The reason? Apparently Nintendo could very well discontinue the console by March 2018, meaning that support and development of games for the platform will probably cease by then, or at least wind down considerably.
This is according to a report from Reuters in which Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima said that the company could be ceasing Wii U production by March 2018. Note that this isn’t confirmation or a guarantee that it will, but at the very least Nintendo has the finish line for the Wii U in their sights.
However this shouldn’t be too surprising. Earlier today Nintendo confirmed that their Nintendo NX console will be seeing a release in March 2017, so it makes sense that Nintendo would rather focus their production and developmental efforts on their latest console, rather than the Wii U which let’s face it, hasn’t exactly been doing too well.
Kimishima notes that he expects the company to sell as many as 800,000 units of the Wii U in 2016 alone. This is a dramatic decrease from last year’s figures in which the company managed to sell 3.26 million, but hopefully the Nintendo NX will give Nintendo the success that they need.
