It was reported just last week that Steam could soon allow gamers to pay for their purchases using Bitcoin and the confirmation has come through today. Bitcoin is now an acceptable payment method on Steam so it’s possible to pay for games purchased online using this cryptocurrency. To accept the cryptocurrency as a form of payment, Valve has teamed up with processing service BitPay.
This partnership between Valve and BitPay that brings Bitcoin as an acceptable payment method for Steam users is more aimed at international users who do have access to more traditional forms of payment.
“Valve reached out to us because they were looking for a fast, international payment method for Steam users in emerging gaming markets in countries like India, China, and Brazil,” says Rory Desmond, the director of business development in North America and APAC at BitPay.
Even though many users are coming online in these countries they don’t necessary have access to traditional methods of payment like credits cards or a PayPal account, so the ability to use Bitcoin will help them purchase online games regardless of whether or not they have a conventional payment method.
No waiting is involved, you can start paying for your online game purchases on Steam using Bitcoin right away.
