According to the email that Valve has sent to some Steam users, “We are excited to announce that Steam is going to start accepting payments via bitcoin. We’re using an external payment provider to process bitcoin payments to help partners reach more customers on Steam.Bitcoin is becoming an increasingly popular online payment method in some countries, and we’re enabling a system that insulates partners from risk and volatility while still providing value to the end customer.”
As to how this works, customers who opt to pay for bitcoin will still pay whatever the game is being priced at. So if a game is priced at $30, the payment processor will convert $30 into whatever the exchange rate is on the day itself, and that amount will be charged to users. This might actually prove to be more advantageous for users.
For example if the bitcoin exchange rate is high, then they might have to part with less bitcoin compared to days when it is lower. However in terms of real-world money, that will remain the same regardless. No word on when Valve will be rolling out the feature, but this is something bitcoin users can look forward to.
