Sony A7R III Rumored To Sport 70/80 Megapixel Sensor

If you wanted a full-frame camera but without the bulk of a DSLR, Sony has you covered with their A7-series of full-frame mirrorless cameras. So far the company has released two-generations of these cameras and presumably a third-generation A7-series is on its way, so what kind of specs can we expect?

According to a report from Sony Alpha Rumors, they are citing their source who has told them that the A7R III could feature a sensor with 70-80 megapixels. Yup, you read that right, that’s a pretty huge leap from Sony’s current A7R II which has a 42.4MP sensor on board. In addition to the newer larger sensor, the A7R III is also rumored to sport an improved In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS).

No doubt the increase in megapixels is a huge deal, but at the end of the day megapixels aren’t everything. For photographers who love to crop but retain the detail, or for those who need to print out huge images without pixelation or loss of quality, a higher megapixel is obviously very much welcome.

However creating a good photograph isn’t just about megapixels as we have mentioned before, so maybe seeing what else the A7R III can do before getting too excited about its megapixel count might be a better idea. No word on when Sony will announce the camera, but take it with a grain of salt for now.
