Facebook already owns one of the most widely used cross-platform messaging services on the planet, WhatsApp, but it’s also positioning Facebook Messenger as the perfect service for keeping in touch with friends and family. It’s giving all Messenger accounts dedicated links that anybody can visit to start a chat with that person, and it has also launched scannable profile codes for Messenger.
Messenger Codes won’t be new to you if you’re familiar with Snapchat’s snapcodes because they’re essentially the same. When someone scans your Messenger Code it adds them as a contact. It’s not a traditional QR code but several dots and dashes that encircle your profile photo. It looks pretty neat.
Facebook Messenger may have started out as a way to get in touch with people you already have as contacts on Facebook but the social networking giant is slowly turning it into something bigger. A platform where companies can provide customer service and you can board your flight, this is just the start, it’s surely going to be interesting to see how Facebook Messenger evolves in the months and years to come.
Messenger Codes are rolling out gradually for Facebook’s billion-plus users but it shouldn’t take too long before they’re live for everybody. Messenger profile links are already up and running, just type someone’s Facebook username after m.me/ and it will launch a chat with them in Messenger.com.
