It has only been a couple of years since Sony and Microsoft released their gaming consoles but these days there are a lot of rumors circulating online that the companies are working on upgraded models of their consoles. Sony is believed to be working on the “PlayStation 4.5,” and Microsoft on a new Xbox One as well. A new report claims that Microsoft is currently testing “a variety” of Xbox prototypes with upgraded hardware.
Not a lot of information is available about these prototypes at this point in time, but The Verge reports that some of these prototypes have upgraded components “you’d use to improve the performance of a PC gaming rig.”
It’s not clear if and when Microsoft intends on unveiling an upgraded Xbox One, if an announcement is to be made one could expect that it will be made at E3 2016, some of the company’s recent filings with the FCC have also aided speculation that a new Xbox One might be announced at E3 2016.
There have also been rumors that a slimmer version of the Xbox One might be unveiled later this year. Microsoft hasn’t provided any official statement on the matter but its Xbox chief Phil Spencer has said previously that the company will release new hardware capability during a generation, which means that a mid-cycle upgrade for Xbox One is not entirely off the table.
