According to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp, with their combined messages, would pass the 60 billion mark – in a single day, mind you. To put things into context, the entire number of SMS messages sent worldwide stands at a third of the amount, which is 20 billion per day.
It remains to be seen as to how accurate the SMS statistic is, but then again, surely Facebook would not pull numbers out of the air to support their case, right? Back in January last year, WhatsApp announced that it went through 30 billion messages each day, and over a billion users as of early this year. It is also safe to assume that the number of SMS messages sent each day globally is one figure that will continue to drop as more and more people step up to the plate and own a smartphone.
