BlackBerry Priv is the first Android smartphone from this Canadian company, it came running Android 5.0 Lollipop straight out of the box and is going to receive updates to latest iterations of the OS. It was only a few days ago that a Priv handset running Marshmallow was spotted and now the company itself has confirmed that the Marshmallow update for Priv is going to be released in the very near future.

It was previously said that this much-awaited update for BlackBerry Priv would arrive in the first quarter of 2016 and the release timeframe isn’t that far off.

The company confirmed during its earnings call for the fiscal fourth quarter results that it’s going to release Marshmallow for the Priv by early May. It didn’t provide a confirmed release date but that’s as close as it gets to an actual date.

The quarterly statement also revealed that the company’s first Android handset didn’t do as well as it might have wanted. About 600,000 units of the BlackBerry Priv were shipped as opposed to estimates of about 850,000. Hardware revenue was down as well but the company did notice a very good performance by its software business.

BlackBerry is yet to reveal what modifications it has made to Marshmallow for this handset but one can imagine that it’s going to do a lot to shore up security on the platform because that’s really a big selling point for this device, a properly secure Android smartphone.
