Japan Airlines (JAL) has recently announced that they will be adopting the use of Microsoft’s Hololens headset to help with the flight service staff training. For those unfamiliar, the Hololens is an augmented reality headset by Microsoft. The idea behind using the Hololens for staff training is so that it will allow them to get a better idea of what they are working with.
For example it can help train staff when it comes to engine maintenance and allows them to view the mechanism from different angles. It can also be used to train cockpit staff to let them see all the various buttons, which is a huge improvement over previous methods that relied on paper educational material.
So why not a virtual reality headset like the Oculus Rift? Turns out that JAL did consider the Oculus Rift, but ultimately the Hololens was the preferred choice as it was untethered, thus allowing users to move around freely, whereas the Oculus Rift required the user to be tethered to a computer.
