For those unfamiliar with the GoPro Omni, this is GoPro’s smaller virtual reality rig. Last year GoPro announced the Odyssey which is a larger version of the Omni that supported as many as 16 cameras at once and would have set customers back a whopping $15,000. Obviously that is way out of the budget for the hobbyist, but the $5,000 Omni should be more palatable.
The Omni will feature six GoPro HERO4 Black cameras and batteries. It will come with one GoPro Omni Sync Rig (which is basically the enclosure for the cameras), a GoPro Kolor software license, a GoPro Smart Remote, six mini USB cables, 32GB microSD cards, and card readers, and more, just to name a few.
Granted having 16 cameras would no doubt result in smoother footage and allow videographers and photographers to capture more detail, but if you don’t want to spend $15,000, then the Omni could be a decent alternative for a third of the price. Pre-orders for the GoPro Omni are expected to begin later today (18th April) at 8am PT, so head on over to GoPro’s website for the details.
