Facebook has had plans in the past to make sure more and more of the world gets connected with one another through the Internet, and some of their commendable efforts include the solar-powered Aquila drone that will be able to bring about Internet connectivity to even the most remote of areas. This time around, Facebook decided to announce Terragraph and Project ARIES that will be mainly focused on terrestrial antennas, albeit taking different routes each.
Terragraph will be able to equip lightpoles as well as other fixtures on the street using antennas so that cities will be covered with a blanket of Wi-Fi, while ARIES will boast of a slew of antennas that are packed into a giant array, allowing it to beam connectivity all the way into the distance.
Terragraph will see Facebook utilize its knowledge of software-defined networks, in addition to the WiGig standard which incidentally, has the ability to handle transmission rates of up to 7 Gbits. All in all, Facebook would like to see a pilot project for Terragraph happen some time later this year in San Jose, California. Hopefully if all things go well, this means more and more parts of the world would be able to be hooked up to the Internet.
