One major change is coming to Google Chrome for Mac. For a long time, the browser has used its own notification system that was developed before the built-in versions arrived on both Windows and OS X. Now, there’s a new option for Chrome users on Mac which allows them to turn on native push notifications. Google is currently testing this behind a feature flag.
When the feature is enabled, Chrome push notifications are delivered in exactly the same way any other notification is delivered on OS X. This is going to very beneficial for users as native push notifications recognize “do not disturb” settings and won’t pop up when that setting is in place.
Those who want to turn on this new feature in their browser have to go to chrome://flags/#enable-native-notifications and manually enable it, a browser restart is required. This entire process needs to be done because the feature is being actively developed so it may have some bugs. The version included in the existing Chrome release is different from the one being tested in unstable nightly Chromium builds.
It might take a while for development to finish before this feature is added to Chrome properly, those interested in having native push notifications for Chrome on Mac have to go through the process mentioned above for now.
