With Overwatch being a multiplayer game, this doesn’t give Blizzard much room to develop stories and backgrounds for characters, at least not within the gameplay itself. This is why last month Blizzard announced that they would be turning to the use of animated shorts and comics in order to better tell the game’s story.
Now if you’re a fan of comics, you might be interested to learn that Blizzard has since released its first Overwatch comic which will give players some background on the character Jesse McCree, who for those unfamiliar is one of the playable characters in Overwatch. Dubbed “Train Hopper”, the good news is that this comic is free and available online.
We took a quick read and it looks pretty good and the story seems to be solid. We’re guessing that since rendering animated shorts can be expensive and time-consuming that Blizzard isn’t going to offer up animated shorts for all of its characters, but not that we’re complaining since this first comic seems to have done a good job in delivering its content.
We’re not sure if there are plans to release actual physical comics that players can buy and collect, but we do know that there are plans for a larger comic in the form of a graphic novel called Overwatch: First Strike due for a release later this year. In the meantime gamers can check out the first animated short featuring gorilla scientist Winston, and the second animated short featuring assassin Widowmaker.
