Every year Google releases a developer preview of the upcoming Android release. The previews are almost always limited to Nexus devices so if you don’t own a Nexus smartphone or tablet you can’t flash the beta firmware. In a significant change from the status quo, Google has decided to expand Android N preview to Sony Xperia Z3. Owners will have to flash the preview build manually first after which updates will be provided by Sony over-the-air.
Google launched the Android N developer preview recently. It showcases some of the new features that are part of the upcoming major Android release. Google hasn’t officially announced it yet but we know that’s going to happen at the I/O 2016 conference next month.
The Xperia Z3 is joining the list of devices that support the Android N preview, the list includes devices like the Nexus 6X, 6, 6P, Nexus Player, the Pixel C tablet and the General Mobile 4G (Android One). Xperia Z3 owners can now test the Android N developer preview on their handset.
Just download the latest N Developer Preview and flash it manually to the Xperia Z3. Sony will send future updates to the developer preview directly over-the-air. It’s likely that Google is going to expand the developer preview program to other manufacturers as well, it’s goal is to make this happen and enable OEMs to adopt the latest Android OS in their upcoming devices sooner.
