Update – According to clarification we have received from Gfinity reps, it seems that Upton’s statement was based on various reports published this year, and that they are not official/insider Microsoft figures. Essentially what this means is that we still have no idea (officially) how many Xbox One units have been sold to date.
We’re not sure why, but Microsoft has been pretty mum on how many Xbox One units that they have sold to date. In fact the last time we heard the official numbers, it was back in 2014 when Microsoft revealed that they were approaching 10 million Xbox One units shipped, but now thanks to the CEO of eSports company Gfinity, we might have a new number.
According to Gfinity’s CEO Neville Upton, he was discussing the company’s launch of a new Tournament Build App for the Xbox One. Upton then stated that with the launch of the app, it would allow the company “to reach Xbox One’s 18 million users globally, offering this new larger audience the opportunity to interact with the Gfinity brand.”
Now we’re not sure where Upton got his numbers from, but if they are any accurate then it looks like 18 million is our new number. However we should also point out that 18 million doesn’t quite tally with what we heard previously. According to a report from last month, it suggested that Microsoft has since sold more than 20 million Xbox One units, so 18 million actually puts it under.
However it does seem to be around that mark, but either way if either report is remotely accurate, it does confirm that Microsoft is lagging behind Sony. Sony revealed that back in November, 2015, they had sold more than 30 million PS4 consoles. This means that by now those numbers should have increased, but since Microsoft does not appear to have plans to announce the official figures anytime soon, do take it with a grain of salt.
