It is not too long since the Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship device was revealed (just last month, in fact), and it has already racked up close to 17 million registrations in just five days. Having said that, despite its release being limited to just core markets initially, Xiaomi is already asking Foxconn to increase production of the Mi 5 so that they are able to meet the demand for their latest flagship.
Foxconn is best known for churning out one iPhone model after another, but this does not mean that the company would place all of its eggs in a single basket. In fact, there is not just one version of the Xiaomi Mi 5 available, but three, with the underclocked Standard Edition sporting 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory, while the High Edition has a similar amount of RAM but double the storage space. Last but not least, there is the Xiaomi Mi 5 Special Edition model that will arrive with a classy looking ceramic back, 128GB of internal memory, and 4GB of RAM. Regardless of which edition you pick, they will all feature 5” Full HD displays and the high end Snapdragon 820 chipset, and of course, Android 6.0 Marshmallow in tow.
Will Foxconn be able to handle an increased production demand from Xiaomi? As it stands, it might take up till April or May for pre-ordered units to ship, so the backlog looks to be ginormous if the initial registrations will all follow through with an actual purchase.
