You really can’t add or take away from the hardware of the Xbox One console but that might change in the future. Microsoft’s Xbox head Phil Spencer has hinted that optional hardware upgrades for Xbox One might be offered at some point down the line. At an Xbox spring showcase a few days ago he revealed that Microsoft wants to make the Xbox One more like a PC.
“We can effectively feel a little bit more like we see on PC, where I can still go back and run my old Doom and Quake games that I used to play years ago,” Spencer said.
Spencer believes that we see more hardware innovation in the console space now that we’ve ever seen before. He suggested that the company could offer Xbox One owners with optional hardware upgrades so that they could remain on top of new technologies while still being able to run existing titles.
This will feed speculation that perhaps Microsoft isn’t planning any further console launches but there’s no confirmation about that yet and Spencer hasn’t talked much in detail about the company’s hardware plans. It appears that he has just floated an idea that might be under discussion at Microsoft. Whether or not the company ends up doing that is another matter altogether.
