League of Legends can be arguably considered to be the most popular game in the world, and is no doubt a big thing among college students. So far, at the beginning of this year, half a dozen different private schools had already offered scholarships based on the game, with hundreds more boasting of student-run clubs that are fully dedicated to the game.
With the announcement by the University of California, Irvine, it makes it the first public university to launch a League of Legends e-sports scholarship program from fall this year onward. Riot Games will play a role as well, forking out dough to create a new PC cafe on campus so that students there can use it, and said cafe is forged after Korean cybercafes with the promise of a “premium League of Legends experience”. Do you think scholarship recipients will end up as the next $1 million player? [Press Release]
