Twitter Sticks To 140-Character Limit

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey made an appearance on The Today Show today in order to celebrate the micro-blogging company’s 10th anniversary. While he made his way to the stage, Dorsey also confirmed to The Today Show’s host Matt Lauer, citing that Twitter’s 140-character limit will remain, and it will not be expanded to the rumored 10,000 characters mark – as how other rumors had been going around. According to Dorsey, “It’s staying. It’s a good constraint for us.It allows for of-the-moment brevity.”

Dorsey did also make mention that the company is working to ensure that there is a balance when it comes to users’ First Amendment rights alongside controlling harassment, which is something that Twitter has come under criticism for some time already. Dorsey continued, “Twitter’s always been about controls. People can follow whoever they want. And it’s our job to make sure they see the most important things and the things that matter to them. There are tweets that promote violence, which is against our terms of service, so people have controls to block and people have controls to mute.”
