It has been rumored for the longest time that in 2016 Apple is going to release a smaller 4 inch iPhone and that’s precisely what it did at its event yesterday. As rumored, the new handset is called iPhone SE, but during the announcement, Apple didn’t say what the SE in iPhone SE stands for. It’s an abbreviation for “Special Edition.”
Yes, the SE in iPhone SE stands for Special Edition, and no I’m not making that up. This was confirmed to journalist Jason Cipriani by senior vice president for marketing at Apple Phil Schiller.
This was a pretty common question when the iPhone SE was being unveiled yesterday. People took to social media to ask what the SE stood for, and while Apple didn’t confirm it during the event, it did reveal later what the actual abbreviation is.
As previously mentioned this is the first new 4 inch iPhone from Apple is a couple of years. It’s essentially the iPhone 6s Plus without 3D Touch in a smaller package. It’s powered by the same A9 processor coupled with the M9 motion co-processor. The handset has a 12 megapixel iSight rear camera with True Tone flash, Focus Pixels Technology and support for Live Photos. NFC is onboard as well for Apple Pay.
Apple will start taking pre-orders for iPhone SE starting March 24th with the handset being released worldwide on March 31st.
