The Apple vs Samsung patent dispute has been going on for a few years now with no end in sight but that might be about to change soon. The United States Supreme Court announced today that it has agreed to hear Samsung’s petition for a writ of certiorari against what it claims to be excessive damages awarded to Apple by the lower courts for allegedly infringing on the fruit company’s patents.

Samsung has already paid Apple over $548 million in damages after an appeal against the 2012 jury verdict was thrown out. It’s now seeking to pare back $399 million from that amount awarded to Apple as Samsung was found to be infringing on Apple’s patented front face, bezel, and colorful icon grid design.

Samsung has already said in court papers that show it score a victory before the Supreme Court it would expect Apple to reimburse the amount. Whether or not the Supreme Court rules in its favor is a completely different matter.

So far the highest court in the United States has only agreed to hear the petition. That doesn’t mean it’s inclined to rule in Samsung’s favor, or in Apple’s favor for that matter. We’ll have to wait and see how this plays out.

Update: Official comment from Samsung:

We welcome the Court’s decision to hear our case. We thank the many large technology companies, 37 intellectual property professors, and several groups representing small business, which have supported our position.

The Court’s review of this case can lead to a fair interpretation of patent law that will support creativity and reward innovation.
