SeriousEngine2Thinking of making your own game? Need an engine that you can base your game off on? The good news is that there are many options available these days, and if you’re a fan of the Serious Sam franchise, its developers Croteam has announced that they will be making the Serious Sam engine available to all.

However we should point out that this engine is the Serious Engine 1.10. It was used in older Serious Sam titles such as Serious Sam Classic: The First Encounter and The Second Encounter, but we suppose it still looks pretty good and holds up pretty well, and if you like what you see, why not?

According to Croteam’s Vyacheslav Nikitenko who worked on the source code, “Historically, this version of Serious Engine is very important for Croteam and for me personally. I created several mods for Serious Sam back in the day, before even starting the work on the source code, and it was a great tool for learning.”

Croteam isn’t the first developer to have released their engines for use to the masses. Just the other day Crytek released their CryEngine V for free, joining the likes of other engines such as Unity and Unreal. Developers who are interested in checking out the Serious Engine source code can hit up GitHub for the download.
