Sony PlayStation VR Price & Release Date Confirmed

sony-morpheus-gdc2014-hubert-nguyenWhen the Oculus Rift was officially announced, many balked at its asking price of $599. However the device seemed cheap when compared to the HTC Vive whose official price was announced at a later date where the headset will be priced at $799. So this pretty much leaves the PlayStation VR, which last we heard we were reassured would not cost $800.

The good news is that it looks like not only will it not cost more than the HTC Vive, but it will also be priced lower than the Oculus Rift. Sony has officially announced the price of the PlayStation VR and it is set at a rather affordable $400, which is more or less the same price as the PlayStation 4 console, meaning that the whole bundle will set you back $800. This markedly cheaper than the Oculus Rift PC bundles, some of which are priced at $1,500.

In terms of specs, the PlayStation VR will feature a 5.7-inch OLED display with a Full HD resolution. It is also capable of displaying content at 120fps, a latency of less than 18ms, and a field of view of about 100 degrees. In addition, Sony has promised that 50 games designed for the PlayStation VR will be released from October to the end of the year.

The headset itself will be seeing an October release. We suppose the only “downside” to the PlayStation VR is that it does not have access to the PC, meaning that there could be certain applications that Oculus Rift/HTC Vive users have access to that they don’t. However if you want a VR headset purely for gaming, then the PlayStation VR does seem like a pretty good solution.
