Microsoft has made a big announcement today that’s going to impact how Xbox owners play online. The company has hinted at allowing cross-network play and today it has announced just that. Microsoft has confirmed that developers making games for Xbox One and Windows 10 will soon be able to support cross-network play, this means that gamers on Xbox will be able to play online against players on PlayStation 4 and PC.
The only caveat here is that Sony and others will have to participate so that gamers on these platforms can play online against each other.
It has been announced today that Rocket League is going to be one of the first titles to support cross-network play, Microsoft says there’s it’s extending an “open invitation for other networks to participate as well,” hinting that other console manufacturers like Sony can allow gamers to play online against each other regardless of the platform they’re on.
Director of ID@Xbox Chris Charla explained that it’s up to game developers to support this feature and even if they do, Xbox Live players will always have the option to play online against Xbox Live players only.
Microsoft’s move has the potential to change how gamers play online, breaking the shackles that bind them to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, thereby removing a major restriction that holds console gaming hostage.
