Pre-orders for the Microsoft HoloLens development kit were priced at $3,000 apiece, targeting qualified developers who resided in the US and Canada. This particular development kit that has started to ship will allow qualified folks to develop and deploy extremely realistic holograms on the untethered, self-contained platform. Not only that, they can also dip their fingers into the Galaxy Explorer Project which actually visualizes planets while showcasing the features found on the HoloLens.
It remains to be seen as to when a consumer version of the Microsoft HoloLens would be made available to the masses, but we do know that it could jolly well end up with heat issues if it were to be used for hours on end, and with developers getting their hands on it, a consumer version should not be too far off in coming, assuming precedences that happened before for other hardware. Would you pick one up out of the sheer novelty value?
