LG Stylus 2 Will Be The First Smartphone To Support DAB+

Are you the type that listens to a lot of digital radio on the go? If you are, LG has recently announced the LG Stylus 2, the first smartphone in the world that they claim is capable of supporting DAB+. The handset was originally announced last month during MWC, but we guess LG has since announced additional features.

So what is DAB+, you ask, and why is it such a big deal? Basically DAB+ is a radio standard that has been adopted across Europe when it comes to digital broadcasts. Over in the US, broadcasters here tend to favor the HD Radio standard, which is why the LG Stylus 2 with DAB+ support will not be making an appearance in the US. Instead it is expected to find its way to countries such as  Australia, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and the UK.

The standard will also encode broadcasts in aacPlus which will be able to offer up better quality audio at small bitrates, and it is also expected to eventually replace the FM analog radio format. According to Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, “We are taking a proactive approach towards the fast-paced technological shift to digital broadcasting with DAB+ to deliver a new paradigm of experiences through the smartphone. With its large 5.7-inch screen, 1 watt speaker and 3,000mAh removable battery, the LG Stylus 2 is the perfect device to enjoy rich, multimedia content.”

Apart from the addition of DAB+ support, the rest of the phone’s specs are expected to remain the same as what we had learnt about last month.
