Instagram, one of the most widely used online services for sharing images, is getting the papal seal of approval. Yes, that’s right, Pope Francis will be joining Instagram in the very near future. Italian wire service ANSA reports that Holy See prefect for communications Dario Viganò confirmed to the Vatican radio that Pope Francis will be making his Instagram debut later this week on March 19th.
His Holiness is no stranger to social media. His official Twitter account has more than 8.9 million followers so really won’t be surprising to see him join another social network.
The news that Pope Francis will be joining Instagram soon follows a recent meeting he had with Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom. In their meeting, the two discussed the power of images and how they can unite people. It’s likely that this meeting convinced the Pope’s team that he needed to have a presence on Instagram as well.
There have been several fake papal accounts on Instagram that have racked up likes in order to cash in on the current pope’s popularity. Fans of the pope and followers of the religion will undoubtedly like the fact that there’s now going to be an official account that they can follow.
